Ricardo Flores Magon Academy

Posted on 19:49 by Unknown

“Marcos Martinez, head of Ricardo Flores Magon Academy, resigns his post.” Denver Westword (CO), 3/8/2012

Marcos Martinez, the controversial founder of the Ricardo Flores Magon Academy and subject of our cover story "A Hard Line," has resigned. So, too, have two other employees whom the school's board of trustees asked to take a paid leave while they investigated complaints against them. The school is now searching for a new leader.

Meanwhile, it seems that Martinez is making moves in Wyoming.

Liberty's Torch, a monthly newspaper in Cheyenne, recently ran a story about Martinez's efforts to start a branch of the Ricardo Flores Magon Academy there.

“Charter school chief rules with iron fist, say teachers.” Denver Westword (CO), 11/29/2011...
Board minutes show that fifteen staff members — a good portion of whom were fired by [Marcos Martinez, the head of Ricardo Flores Magón Academy charter school in Westminster] for "not being a good fit" — left in the first four years of the school's existence.

Some of them say Martinez favored male staff members and those who were Hispanic. They say he also created an uncomfortable working environment.

Mitchell is suing Martinez and the school in U.S. District Court. She believes Martinez discriminated against her because she has a disability — asthma — that exacerbated her illness. Further, she believes Martinez treated her differently than other employees because although she herself is Latina, she's married to a white man.

Another former teacher filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, claiming she'd been discriminated against because she was a woman, especially during and after her pregnancy. She settled with the school.

RFMA's problems don't end there, however. The school, which moved to a new location this fall, has also been criticized by state education officials for its high teacher turnover rate and its use of Che Guevara as a role model for young children. It has been slapped on the wrist by the county health department for not having hot water or a food-service license at its old facility and is embroiled in a lawsuit with its previous landlord...

Madrone Trail Charter School

Posted on 19:44 by Unknown

“Madrone Trail parents seek intervention.” Mail Tribune (OR), 11/20/2012

A parent of two Madrone Trail Charter School students urged the Medford School Board Monday to intervene with the operations of the charter school board.

Lorraine McDonald said she represented a number of parents who have come together to share their worries about the charter school board...

McDonald said she was one of the founding parents of the 200-student, Waldorf-inspired charter school, and since its opening, she has grown concerned over the board's ability to manage the school's future...

Members of the Medford School Board said that in order for the charter to be renewed next year, a lot of progress would have to be made very quickly...

“9 Investigates lawmakers' connections with charter schools.”

Posted on 19:41 by Unknown

“9 Investigates lawmakers' connections with charter schools.” WFTV (FL), 11/14/2012

ORLANDO, Fla. — Over the past five years, the number of charter schools in Central Florida has climbed. These "nontraditional" public schools receive taxpayer money -- and 9 Investigates' George Spencer found some of the same lawmakers who are writing the rules for charter schools are also benefiting from them.

Dayspring Academy Charter School in Port Richie is thriving, as evidenced by the "Another 'A' Rating" banner on its website. Last March, its business administrator, John Legg, made a special request to change admission rules...

The school board did deny the request. But that didn't matter in the end as Legg, was also a powerful state representative, and the legislature soon changed laws to allow what Legg proposed.

"We, as taxpayers, need to be suspect about the motivation for pouring so many resources into charter schools," said Orange Countypublic school parent Linda Kobert...

9 Investigates asked Florida Sen. David Simmons about the concerns, and he said conflict of interest changes are already in the works...

Valley Academy Charter School

“Hurricane teacher arrested on sex charges.” St. George Daily Spectrum (UT), 10/30/2012

ST. GEORGE — A former violin teacher at Valley Academy Charter School in Hurricane was arrested Tuesday on four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony, following allegations made against him by four students at the school.

Lynn R. Lundstrom, 62, of Ivins, was arrested following an investigation by the Hurricane Police Department. Four students reported being touched inappropriately by Lundstrom during class...

Lundstrom was listed as a strings instructor at Valley Academy Charter School on the school’s website prior to the investigation, but that information has since been removed...

According to the probable cause statement, when Lundstrom was interviewed by Hurricane detectives regarding the allegations, Lundstrom allegedly admitted that he had, at least on one occasion, inappropriately touched a child at the school...

Estancia Valley Classical Academy

Posted on 19:32 by Unknown

“PED warns charter school against religious teachings.” KRQE (NM), 11/2/2012

A letter from the Public Department of Education says some parents have complained a new charter school in Moriarty is using taxpayer dollars to teach religion.

The letter was sent less than a month ago by Secretary-designate of Education Hanna Skandera, reminding school officials to follow state law.

“What we provide here is a rigorous academic alternative,” says Roger Lenard, president of the Estancia Valley Classical Academy (EVCA) Governing Council...

The state sent a letter telling the school it "must immediately cease using any biblical or religious-based curriculum and/or instructional activities, if it is indeed doing so."...
=================================================================
“Monkeys On Trial In The Estancia Valley?” New Mexico Central, 11/3/2012

We found ourselves not-too-terribly surprised to read recent articles (“Charter School Warned,” “PED warns charter school against religious teachings“) regarding accusations by the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) that the Estancia Valley Classical Academy (ECVA) may have strayed over the line between religious and secular education. Our lack of surprise – and, to some extent, our amusement – stems from the fact that both articles mention an individual who was featured in the context of his views on “science” (including an apparent bent toward creationism or, at least, anti-evolutionism) in one of our previous articles (See our August 11, 2011 article, An Article About Articles). That individual, Roger Lenard, is variously described as “one of the school’s founders” and the president of the school’s governing council.

Given the many references to Mr. Lenard’s reported creationist beliefs and purported attempts to insert them into academic curricula, we certainly understand why parents would be concerned about what may be taught in science classes at a school over whose curriculum Mr. Lenard likely wields substantial influence...

“Charter school companies, online learning outfits try to wield influence in Tallahassee.”

Posted on 19:22 by Unknown

“Charter school companies, online learning outfits try to wield influence in Tallahassee.” Miami Herald (FL), 10/22/2012
In the looming battle for public education dollars, Jon Hage has launched a pre-emptive strike.

His school management company, Charter Schools USA, has doled out more than $205,000 in contributions to political candidates and organizations this election cycle, state records show. That's more than triple what the Fort Lauderdale-based company spent on political campaigns in 2010, and seven times what it spent in 2008.

"If we don't support our friends in Tallahassee, they are left out there to take the enemy's bullet," Hage said.

For-profit education companies are becoming serious players in lobbying the Florida Legislature. In the current election cycle, charter school companies, school management firms, online learning outfits and for-profit colleges have lavished more than $1.8 million to statehouse candidates, electioneering organizations and political parties, according to a Miami Herald review of Florida campaign finance data.
Most of the money went to Republicans, whose support of charter schools, vouchers, online education and private colleges has put public education dollars in private-sector pockets...

This season's top private contributors included Academica Management, a Miami-based charter school company, and its construction arm, School Development LLC. The companies and their high-level executives gave more than $220,000 in the current election cycle, including $60,000 in contributions to the Republican Party of Florida...

Thousands of dollars also came in from education companies in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Kansas...

Tom Cerra, who lobbies for the Miami-Dade school system, said the for-profit companies are positioning themselves to push through an ambitious agenda...

The charter-school lobby will fight for a share of the lucrative construction dollars allocated to traditional school districts, something it failed to accomplish last year...

Happy Valley School

Posted on 19:15 by Unknown

“Insiders benefiting in charter deals, Board members, school officials did more than $70mil in business.” The Arizona Republic, 11/17/2012

... The Gaddie family reflects how family ties can run deep at charter schools.

Happy Valley School in Peoria has a three-member non-profit board made up entirely of Gaddie family members, according to the most recent federal tax return. Ernest Gaddie is president. His wife, Delite Gaddie, is secretary, and their son, Glen Gaddie, is a board member...

For several years, the school has contracted with Gaddie Curriculum & Education Consulting, a business owned by Ernest and Delite Gaddie. The company provides business consulting, maintenance and operations services and licenses curriculum to the school, according to tax returns and audits...

In 2010, the school’s auditor in the annual audit began questioning the contracted services with the Gaddies’ company, and said the value of the agreements “were not supported by documentation that provides the method and/or rationale for how such fees for services were determined to be at fair value.”...

The 2011 audit expressed the same concerns...

Nothing prohibits a school’s board from being all family members.

The state doesn’t set limits on the number of family members. The Internal Revenue Service doesn’t restrict board membership, but in recent years it has required non-profits to disclose more information about their boards...

Charter officials say it’s common for family to be involved in the same charter school...
